What is the CHAA self-assessment?

The CHAA self-assessment will help you determine how your organization currently stacks up in terms of health and safety by reviewing your program components, outcome measures, trends, and dissemination. It will help ensure that your organization is on the road to establishing a truly healthy, safe and productive environment for your workers.

What is the purpose of the self-assessment?

The self-assessment is intended to:

(1) promote occupational health program excellence, benefiting the health, safety and productivity of workers and organizations,

(2) foster understanding of the CHAA process and the evaluation criteria,

(3) allow a confidential educational self-assessment that would indicate areas of internal strengths, potential improvements and gaps to be addressed, and

(4) encourage potential applicants to determine whether their programs could qualify for the Award.

Who should complete the self-assessment?

The self-assessment is useful for organizations in manufacturing, healthcare and other service sectors, as well as state and federal government. We encourage a team approach, with input from medical, industrial hygiene, safety, benefits, risk management, and other disciplines.

Why should an organization complete the self-assessment?

An organization should complete the self-assessment to identify their strengths, weaknesses and gaps and to foster an understanding of standards of excellence for workplace health, wellness and safety utilizing the CHAA criteria. The on-line self-assessment makes it easy to evaluate your organization’s health, safety, and environmental programs against the Corporate Health Achievement Award standards and to benchmark them with similar organizations in the future. It also provides an understanding of the CHAA scoring and can help ease applying for the award.

How does the self-assessment work?

You can complete the program over a period of several days or weeks by answering some of the questions and saving your work. Upon completing a section, you will receive a score for that section. Once all 4 sections are completed, you will receive an overall Summary Score and be able to compare your scores to other organizations and to Corporate Health Achievement Award winners.

How is it Organized?

The self-assessment consists of 22 categories in four major sections.

  • Leadership and Management
  • Healthy Workers
  • Healthy Environment
  • Healthy Organization

How long will it take to complete the self-assessment?

Each of the four sections has 4-6 components. Each section can be completed in 30-40 minutes. The total self-assessment may require several hours. The good news is that after completing any section or category in a section, you can save your work and return to finish the self-assessment at another time.

What is the Corporate Health Achievement Award?

The American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM) created the Corporate Health Achievement Award to provide national recognition and honor to organizations in North America with exemplary worker health, safety and environmental management programs. It reinforces the importance of worker health and safety and provides model organizations with visibility and validation for their efforts. For years, employers have been quietly investing in programs to protect and promote the health of their workers. ACOEM established this annual Award to publicly recognize the achievements of these leaders, and to nationally promote health and safety in the workplace.

Who is eligible to apply for the award?

North American organizations, including manufacturing, service, government, for-profit or non-profit, may apply. Applicants must employ 500 or more workers.

How are the award recipients selected?

A professional team of trained examiners conducts a rigorous review of applicants’ health and safety programs, using a checklist and scoring system. This review measures 22 aspects, including leadership and management of an organization, healthy workers, healthy organization, and healthy environment. After preliminary judging, exemplary programs are selected for site visits in order to verify and re-score the application. After this, the final winners are chosen.

What makes the CHAA unique?

Our award is the most comprehensive health, safety and environmental award program. We look at a broad spectrum of indicators for corporate health. Our evaluation and feedback process is also much deeper than other programs. Our examiners provide feedback to ALL entrants - whether they win or not - and the information is extremely helpful to organizations that are trying to improve their health environment.
